The Humidor Comes To Life

The Humidor Comes To Life

The humidor its own unique way of breathing life within the box. There are some elements which make up this core essence.

Once you make sure you put in place elements and tools, your humidor comes to life. But how does it do that? It has to do with these elements working in a synergistic fashion that creates its magic.

Humidor's life componants

First, you want to look at the makeup of the box's lining. This is most important to the absorption of sustainable humidity. The most preferred wood for the humidors lining is Spanish Cedar, or, Cedrela. A couple others would be Mahogany, or another one, Red Cedar. For certain reasons, Cedrela is the most used wood to sustain the proper environment.

About Spanish Cedar

A little known but more accurate name for Spanish Cedar is Cedrela. It does not actually come from Spain, but from South, and Central America. What enables it to be the number one choice is its natural qualities that enhance the cigar's aromas. It lends itself to aid in a cigar's aging process, and as mentioned earlier, this wood can absorb moisture and humidity.

The tools of life

Now, there are two components, or tools, enabling you to monitor and regulate the interior of the humidor's atmosphere. The humidifier for one, and the hygrometer for the other.

The breadth in motion

This tool, to coin a phrase, is what breathes life within the box, and to your cigars. The hygrometer generates and circulates the moisture that is then absorbed within the humidor, (Cedrela lining), and by the cigars. It gives the proper environment imperative to the preserving you collection.

These units will come in different sizes, models, and from different manufactures. A popular included in a lot of humidors are the black disc shape, Credo brand. Also more and more rectangular modes are on the market. How they are attached is often times by magnate under the lid. This gives you more accessibility to monitor and calibrate without opening the lid too much and letting the humidity to escape.

"Seeing" the atmosphere

Now the other important tool is a hygrometer. The hygrometer lets you check the level of humidity so you know when adjustments are required. You always need to maintain a 70% humidity level. These can also be attached by magnate under the lid. Sometimes you'll see them affixed by Velcro.

Often times, the hygrometer will be mounted on the front of the humidor on the outside. I prefer this because you can always eye the level without undue opening and closing the lid. Calibration will be required before you mount it in your box. There are ways of doing that yourself with some instruction provided on websites, or you can have a professional do it at the shop.

As you can see, the humidor isn't some box to throw your sticks in. This all important support system is what enables you to preserve your prized collection.
