The Humidor in Art Form
At first thought, humidors for cigars aren't readily seen of as "art". They're mostly thought of as serving a function. It's a specialized box to contain, protect, and preserve our favorite cigars. They are at most seen as an accoutrement in the world of cigars. However, these days, as you search more across the web, catalogues, shops, etc. you begin to see that these "boxes", have evolved into something of another level of creativity.
Humidors and Egypt?
Here's just one example. There is beautiful and completely functional humidor by Michel Perrenoud, (Pair-No), from Switzerland called the Pyramid. He created actually a number of Pyramids, but the Maassar Pyramid is one of the line. They were launched in 1993, and Michel was one of just two designers to be invited to "Les Objects d'Art Autour Du Taback", an exhibition put on in Paris to showcase a variety of tobacco products and accessories.
The Maassar Pyramid was made much like the famous constructions seen in Egypt. Incredibly, the humidor is complete with a geometrically perfect shape, and also perfect in its functionality. This 100 count humidor sports two humidifiers, and includes a bottom drawer for accessories such as cutters and lighters.
Ode to the Pirates
Here's another perfect example. Daniel Marshall has brought another level of artisanship to the table. Within his signature collection is the Treasure Chest limited edition. This is a piece that was inspired by mystique, spirit, and lore of the old pirate days. This is made of Burl, with the exterior polished with a "thousand coat" finish. With such detail in Daniel's work, his humidors can take up to four months to finish. And that's from the start of the idea, all the way to the completed product.
Our Online Crafters
The online giant, Cuban Crafters who have been in business for several years now has a particularly beautiful box, the "CC-Palacio-2". It sports a beveled class top, with it's exterior made of Maple Burl and has the requisite or most in demand, Spanish Cedar lining. In the front, there are windows for easy viewing of cigars, and had hidden piano hinges.
There are also humidors that eloquently resemble furniture pieces. The Cabinet humidor can rise to art level in itself, and add another aspect of design or dimension to the room or office. They can be table top minis', or they can be wall size. Not only do they function for the cigars fundamentally, but they provide a great display of your collection.
Time and Genius
Actually, as we look back a bit further in time, we've uncovered these "designers", or craftsmen have been creating art with humidors for several ages. Which is something not too expected. So you see, there is absolutely no limit in craftsmanship, elegance, creativity, and design to what starts out as just a functional special box for cigars. They are made with such a variety of shapes, sizes, and detail, and concepts all stemming from the genius of the designer.
