The Hygiene Habits Dentists Recommend For Their Patients

Your teeth can last a long time, if only you take care of them along the way

. Unfortunately, while dental care has certainly improved over the years, dentists say that many modern hygiene habits have not. In fact, in today's busy society many people forget to make time to actually make appointments with their dental professionals. This is, indeed, the most important thing you can do for the long lasting health of your teeth. But of course that is only part of the job. You have to do the rest of the job in your daily life. Here are some of the hygiene habits that dental professionals recommend for their patients.

Brushing Correctly

The toothbrush is your most powerful tool against the formation of cavities and tooth decay. While most people know that brushing their teeth is important, it may come as a surprise to learn that you could be doing it wrong. There is a right way and a wrong way to brush your teeth, after all. The right way involves brushing with the bristles facing your teeth at a 45 degree angle, getting good coverage of the gum line. This is where dentists say plaque has a tendency to accumulate. Once it breaks that barrier and gets underneath the gums, serious gingivitis can follow. Brush at least twice a day for best results.

Flossing

You've heard it a million times, undoubtedly, but it is as important now as it ever was. Using dental floss allows you to get to particles of food and the development of plaque that brushing will not. Food particles have a way of getting in between the teeth and cavities can form from the sides just as easily as they can from any other direction. By flossing at least once a day, dentists say you can do a lot to prevent some of the decay that often accompanies patients who don't engage in this important practice. If you can't stand the traditional flossing methodology, many manufacturers sell floss picks that can make it a bit easier.

Watch Your Diet

One of the most important things you can do for your teeth isn't so much a matter of hygiene as it is a matter of diet. A small amount of soda in your diet isn't going to create a haven for cavities, but if it is a regular part of your day, it could be causing problems. Limit soda, alcohol, and coffee if you want to make sure your teeth stay healthy and white. Dentists recommend limiting sugar in general, as it causes the mouth to release bacteria that can be very harmful to your enamel.
