Because science doesn't entirely understand how this works, there are some gaps in our understanding of the psyche.

That doesn't make the scientific, practical knowledge available from a study of psychology less valid. It makes it more important. Only by gaining that knowledge will you understand enough to participate in the discussion of how new discoveries impact our understanding of the way the mind works. In other words, you have the gain understanding in order to have that understanding shattered productively by new discoveries.

One of the advantages of an online program is that it tends to focus more on the science (which is easy to learn in the online environment) and less on practice. In contrast, career colleges that teach counseling in person sometimes err by focusing on the practice and avoiding the difficult, sometimes brain-twisting psychological science.

Having patient contact is obviously essential to learning how to be a good counselor, and online colleges pass students along to environments where they can gain that knowledge. This is important, since it tends to be difficult to transform from student to counselor without overwhelming patients with a lot of snap diagnoses and psychological jargon.

But it is critical to know what the words in that psychological jargon mean. It's vital to have a firm grasp on the greater concepts that guide the discipline. In that regard, online counseling schools tend to have an edge, providing an information-rich instructional environment and allowing you to move at whatever pace you need to in order to fully absorb the information..
