You have to plan how you want it to look and how you want your visitors to navigate their way from one page to the next. Before you start writing down the HTML and PHP codes, however, you have to answer first a few questions.

One of the things that you have to know is the reason for the existence of the site. A web site for social networking would definitely be designed in a different way as a web site that is dedicated to ecommerce. The former would be all about being able to provide real-time updates while the latter should be able to handle various payment gateways and provide security of information. It is also a good idea to, at this stage, determine whether the aim you have in mind right now would be a long-term one or would your site need to undergo changes in the future.

As a web architect, you also have to figure out the organizational structure of the site. Would it be flat, index model, strict hierarchy, or multi-dimensional hierarchy? The model that your site would be using would determine how you would set up the pages as well as the content. Of course, once you have determined this, you do not just sit down and start writing the codes. You need to make an outline first and determine where each page goes and what content should be written in it.

Once you have an outline of your website architecture, you can start creating the visual design of your site. Keep in mind that what you include in the design could have an effect on your site traffic. Too much flashy animation as well as large images can cause your site to load slower. This could, in turn, cause your visitors to leave your site without even reading what you have to say.

Lastly, create the navigation system for your website architecture. Theres no need for you to put too many links or navigation items. By carefully outlining what each page does, you can actually see what you need to include in your main navigation bar, which one should go to a local navigation bar, and which ones should appear as utility links.
