The Importance Of Citizen Journalism In Today

How many times have you been disappointed reading a newspaper article

? Sometimes we may read a newspaper article and the article somewhat doesn't attract us. Even the way it is presented and the opinions expressed may not suit us. We may get disappointed with the way the writer has expressed his idea and we will be thinking that the article doesn't express our view point. Why? Isn't all the journalists and reporters supposed to write from the viewpoint of people like us? They are. But the problem comes from the newspaper agencies or the online agencies. Generally all the news stories are filtered through an editor who has a specific agenda. In a sense, every newspaper that has been existing goes through this specific agenda. The news that is reported has to be from liberal to conservative or to the extent of being completely non-biased.

To break from this monotonous rigid agenda, a new kind of journalism has come up. This is known as citizen journalism. The basic idea behind citizen journalism is that people who aren't professional journalist or without any journalism training can become a journalist. Using the tools of modern technology and global distribution of the Internet, these citizen journalists can create augment or fact-check media news by themselves or in collaboration with others.

The basic examples of citizen journalism could be writing about a council meeting on your blog, or fact check a newspaper articles about service provider"s deals like Xfinity Deals from the mainstream media and the list goes on and one. Even you can pinpoint any factual error you come across any articles or blogs. You can even snap a digital photo of newsworthy events in your neighborhood or town or even videotape them and post on websites like YouTube.

Frankly, all these can be considered as acts of journalism even if they don't go beyond the simple observation at the time of the important event. With the wide spreading of so many unlimited tools for capturing live events from a tiny camera to videophones; average citizens can now become journalist. They can cover a new and distribute it globally. This was an act that was once the providence of established journalist and media organizations.

Also the reason what made citizen journalism quite popular was that the traditional method was quite effective at delivering good quality content but with a lack of journalistic integrity. Because many of the reporters or media concerns were basically concerned about the limited space, fear of losing advertising dollars, etc. So what happens is that the news article doesn't express the content it has to and also the ideas that they represent may not be true and will lack the points that you expected.

Citizen journalism especially in the form of online publications and contents provides the niche. Basically by allowing multiple voices to be heard and expressed from all the viewpoints, everyone gets the chance to contribute. The only thing is that the editor or the in charge has to show no bias towards a specific news or ideology. So what happens is that readers, especially broad-minded ones will have access to a more refined and clear judgment of an issue. Especially in online publications, those topics that have not been made to the local newspapers in the traditional method will be published without the assessment of space. So in short people can express their ideas freely without any constraint and boundaries.

Some observers may criticize citizen journalism as unprofessional and unethical, but it definitely hampers the growth of corruption. It seems that citizen journalism has been able to bring the various roots of corruption into the harsh daylight and created public awareness about it. Ultimately, it is a positive thing for journalism and the various journalist around the world as it enables something that was lacking. It is competition from the public and duty towards the society.
