The Importance Of Coolants In The Engine
Think back to the hottest day of the summer last year
. Or even think back to the hottest day you have ever had to spend any amount of time outside in. Did you have water to drink at your disposal or did you have to suffer through in the heat? Hopefully you were allowed some bottles of water or even a different type of fluid so that you didn't get thirty or dehydrated. The same can be said for your vehicle's engine and the coolant it needs it order to function. You don't like being hot and sweaty with a parched throat, why would you expect a car engine to perform any differently in the heat?
What the Coolant Does in the Engine
The coolant in the car is chemically composed to make a reaction to keep the engine cool. The engine needs to stay between a certain temperature so that all of the other fluids that come in to contact with it also don't overheat and cause the engine to not run right. We have all seen what happens when an engine isn't cooled properly, no matter how hot of a day it is. There will be a car pulled off on the side of the road with steam and maybe even smoke billowing from out underneath the hood. That is not a place that you want to be, so get the coolant checked on a regular basis.
Checking the Coolant Levels
Checking the coolant is done by a gauge in the reservoir near the engine. If you don't even know which one is the coolant compared to the oil dip pan, then it might be just a better idea to schedule a maintenance exam for your car. You can have them review other things like the air pressure in your tires and the amount of brake pad left on the brakes. Driving down the road safely requires a lot of things to be in great working order, so don't skimp out on having them done. And having a checkup before there is a problem can be a lot cheaper than having to repair an expensive problem down the road. Maintenance checks only take an hour or so, so what would you rather have - an hour in the shop or days being repaired?
Adjusting the Levels to the Proper Spot
When an ASE master technician checks the coolant levels they will either be fine or need some added. The technician will be able to add exactly the kind and the amount needed for your engine to run properly. They can also check and adjust all of the other fluids so you don't have to worry about anything else than where you are going to go on your next road trip. If you go to a small shop, they might explain to you how to check the coolant if you are going on a long trip to a hot location, but mostly they will just suggest to have a technician do it. So many things can go wrong - such as you add the wrong kind of fluid to the reservoir that it is just easier to have a professional do it.
