The Importance Of Fireplaces In A Home

The fireplace used to be the central focus of a house

. It was not only a way to keep the home warm, but it was the way that women cooked for their families. Without a fireplace in the home, people would have frozen and not had a way to eat warm food. Since those days, fireplaces have been relied upon less as a necessity and more as just a decorative piece in a home. But fireplaces can still be important in terms of the value of your home and to provide a secondary source of heat.

Types of Fireplaces for Residential Homes

There are two types of fireplaces that you can have in the home; one that burns real wood or one that is powered by a fuel source. The fuel source can be natural gas or propane, but powered behind a decorative piece that looks like real logs. It still provides heat to the room or region, however no logs need to be added in to keep the fire built up. It is also a bit cleaner without any ash residue or logs being carried in and out of the house. The only downside to most fuel powered fireplaces is that they will not run without electricity because they need an ignition to light the flame.

Wood burning fireplaces are very traditional, but starting to become less popular because they do require real wood. People don't like to cut and get their own wood, plus it is a little bit dirtier than if you were to run a fuel source to the fireplace. However, a wood burning fireplace can work as a heat source whether the power is on or off during a storm. If a person has access to logs or a trailer to go and pick up a load of wood that has already been split, then the cost to run a wood burning fireplace is very low.

Benefits of a Fireplace

There are a couple of benefits that can result in having a fireplace installed in your home. They increase the value of a house because people like to have the added heat source available to them. Whether it is a gas furnace or burns real wood, people like to know they have alternatives besides just the furnace in their home. And the aesthetic look of a fireplace is appealing to some people, even if they never plan on using the fireplace. They will pay more for a house that has one just to use it for an appealing look in a living room or other area of the house.

Having a fireplace in your home can also provide heat in the case of a power outage in most cases. Gas powered fireplaces might need electricity to burn, but if there is a manual light switch it might still run during a power failure. Log burning fireplaces can be used anytime, from during a storm with no power to a blustery, brutal day when the wind keeps knocking the power out. As long as there are logs to burn, the fireplace will keep heat pumping in to a room or area of the house.
