Choosing curtains is often left as a last thought when decorating a room

, and few people realise the importance of a good pair of curtains. This is unfortunate however as curtains are actually very important items in any room for several reasons. This is both for their appearance and for their purpose, and a good pair of curtains can do a great deal for any room.

In terms of their purpose curtains are of course useful for covering windows and blocking out light. This is very important at night and ensures that we have an entirely dark room in order to sleep in. This can affect our quality and quantity of sleep which can have a knock on affect on our day-to-day lives. This shows why it's very important to have made to measure curtains. Made to measure curtains will made to the specifications that you request and this way you will have curtains that fit the windows perfectly rather than leaving space around the edges or not coming all the way to the bottom which would provide an area for light to get in. The other purpose of curtains is to provide privacy and to ensure that no one outside can see you. Of course this is mainly useful for when we are getting changed or likewise as it means we can go naked without fear of being exhibitionists. We may also choose to have different curtains depending on the type of windows as these will look better than trying to use the same type of curtain for every room. For example roman blinds are one alternative and roman blinds often look particularly good when used on skylights or loft or attic windows. Choose curtains depending on shape and size of windows and also keep the window material in mind while selecting the right blinds.

The design of your curtains is also important, and you need to ensure that your pattern is not too busy or garish. There is nothing more offensive in a room dcor than a badly patterned curtain. Any obvious or loud pattern is also far more likely to clash with the carpet and soft furnishings (this is a clichd sign of an elderly home). Thus plainly coloured curtains are often popular, as are some more novelty designs such as images of rock pools or famous art which are very popular for roman blinds. It is important that you choose curtains that will not only look good themselves, but also match the walls, carpet and soft furnishings. At the same time the more versatile your curtains are, the higher the chance you'll have of keeping them when you come to change your other furnishings.

As you can see then there are many factors involved in choosing curtains, and that's without even mentioning the importance of choosing a good make that will be durable and effective.
