The Importance Of Insulation In Your Home
Insulation helps make your house more efficient
. It will help block the transfer of heat or cold from outside into your home. In cooler months, it will protect the inside of your home from the outside cool air and in the summer, helps keep the hot air out to maintain a cooler heat inside. It will help lower your heating and cooling bills. Insulation also has a second purpose. It helps absorb sound, therefore it helps block out sounds from room to room or from floor to floor if it in is the ceiling.
Many parts of your home may have insulation, or need insulation. Older homes that have drafts are less likely to have insulation. Newer homes are usually very well insulated. If you were to take apart your home and look at its insides, the following should have insulation: ceilings, attics, exterior walls, interior walls (for sound barrier), basements, and crawl spaces.
Insulation comes in many Varieties
When choosing what type of insulation you are going to use, there are four types to choose from. Depending on where the insulation is going and how much money you want to spend will determine what insulation is used. The four main types are batt and blanket insulation, rigid board insulation, loose-fill insulation and spray foam insulation.
Batt and blanket insulation is the type that is most commonly known. It comes in rolls of different widths and it is fit between framing on walls or in rafters. It will insulate walls, floors, and ceilings. Rigid board insulation is mostly used for flat roofs or for insulating walls and floors of a basement. Attic insulation is usually the loose-fill type as it can be blown into the attic using special equipment. Attics can be hard to access or too small of a space to stand in, so the spray foam insulation will help aid you if that is the situation you are dealing with. Spray foam insulation is sprayed into small spaces such as around windows frames to prevent heat loss.
Attic Insulation is a Simple Solution
A solution to a more energy efficient home is insulating your attic. When deciding to make your house more efficient, the attic should be the first place you decide to insulate. The reason insulating your attic is such so sensible is because it is the space in your house that easily looses heat in the winter and collects heat in the summer. Heat rises, so the heat from your home in the winter goes up into your attic and will sneak outside if there is no insulation blocking it. On the other hand, in the hot summer months, heat can enter the attic if there isn't proper attic insulation and this will cause the house to heat up. Proper attic insulation will help keep your energy bill down, saving you money. Once the insulating is done, it will not require any ongoing maintenance.
The R factor of Insulation
Every type of insulation is rated by it a R value. The R value is the unit used to measure the insulations ability to resist heat loss. All the different types of insulation vary in their ability to insulate. It is always best to choose insulation with a high R value. Insulation that varies in thickness, but has the same R value will insulate equally. Making sure the insulation always stays dry is critical because if moisture or water gets into the insulation it will lower the R-value and decrease the efficiency.
