The Importance Of Mirrors In Building Design

When it comes to stage magic performances, the use of 'smoke and mirrors' is very common in creating illusions

. Similar thing is true when it comes to architectural and interior designs. Different types, configurations and colors of mirrors are used to create specific types of aesthetic illusions.

They are intended to be integrated in architectural and interior designs of houses and high-rise buildings. Mirrors are typically used to create the illusion of larger interior space. This technique is especially useful for small apartments or condominium units. Hence, it is not very surprising why mirrors are commonly integrated in the design of urban dwellings.

Playing with lights

When used as exterior components, mirrors can be integrated on the walls or roofs of a building structure in such as way that they can create playful reflections of sunlight and ambient lights. The design does not need to create dazzling effects but a building that has mirror components in their exteriors can easily stand-out.

Of course, many local ordinances and federal laws, particularly building codes, may prohibit or limit certain architectural designs that could cause nuisance and potential harm to the public. These may include the use of full mirrors in building facades.

On the other hand, windows or glass hanging walls that are partly reflective are practical in some sense, especially in a highly urbanized setting wherein direct sunlight may have difficulty reaching alleys and streets because of the high-rise obstructions.

Cozy interior

Aside from creating the illusion of larger interior space, mirrors can also improve the natural illumination of a house or office building. In this manner, electrical energy can be saved. Integrating mirrors in interior design could be an environment-friendly option.

Even at night, interior mirrors can amplify or focus the intensity of artificial sources of lights such as florescent tubes and incandescent bulbs. Some mirror configurations such as concave mirrors are designed to function in that manner. Mirrors that are placed in strategic locations inside a house can minimize the need of having several interior lights simultaneously opened. This translates to monthly power bill savings.

Security functions

For those who have the flair for espionage or suffering from mild paranoia, one-way mirrors can be installed inside their houses. Well, one does not necessarily has to become paranoid or voyeuristic to want a one-way mirror installed somewhere in the house such as in the living room. Some tinted windows may also serve similar functions.
