The Importance Of Regular Tire Maintenance

When it comes to your vehicle, it is very important to keep up with the maintenance of the tires

. In fact, this is one of the most important parts of keeping your vehicle safe for you and your passengers, not to mention the other people on the road. Good tires are what makes your vehicle stable, and they keep the vehicle driving smoothly. Make sure that you are doing tire checks often at home, and that you are also having them rotated and balanced on a regular basis at a professional tire and auto facility.

Check Air Pressure

The first thing that you can do at home is check the air pressure in your tires. You will want to look at the manual that came with your vehicle so that you will be able to know what the tire pressure should be. It will give you a range. Check the tire pressure at least once a month so that you can make sure that it is within safe limits. If, for some reason, the tire pressure is low, you will need to add some air to the tires until it is back up to the safe range. Just be sure that you don't add too much air to the tires, or this can be a hazard itself.

Check Tire Pressure

Checking your tire pressure is easy. If you have never done it, then here is a quick guide for you to follow. First, start by taking the valve cover off of the tire. Next, you will push the pressure gauge onto the valve and it will show you what the tire pressure is. Some of the newer cars will have built-in tire pressure gauges that will inform you when your pressure is too low, but most of the older models do not have this technology.

Check the Wear and Tear

The next thing that you will want to do is look at them from time to time, and check their wear. Make sure that they still have a decent amount of tread, and that they are not balding. If they are, then it may be time for new tires. Also, make sure that there are not any nails or particles stuck in the tire. It is very important to take your vehicle to a tire professional if there is something in the tire, rather than try to remove it yourself, as this could lead to a flat tire!

Professional Tire Maintenance

Next, there are certain things that you will not be able to do from home. You will want to make sure that you have your tires professionally inspected at least once a year. They can tell you if there is anything wrong with them, and if you need new tires. They will also rotate and balance them. It is a general rule of thumb to have them rotated and balanced every six months or 6,000 miles.

Also, make sure that the mechanic checks the tire alignment because this is a very important step, as well. If your alignment is off, you can have some serious issues with your vehicle and it can wear the tread faster.
