As keen DIY enthusiasts, one way in which you might consider saving money would be to service your own boiler but, unless you are a qualified boiler engineer, it can be a really bad idea. There are some jobs that need to be done properly and for this type of work, you need to call upon the services of a professional boiler servicing engineer.

In fact, for gas boilers, in the UK, it is actually illegal to tamper with the innards of your boiler. The risk is just too great. Leaking gas can easily cause an explosion but for oil-fired boilers, there is no legal requirement to install or service a boiler but perhaps there should be.

If there is not enough oxygen, Carbon Monoxide is produced and this is extremely poisonous. Every year about 30 people are killed because of Carbon monoxide and 200 are suffer ill health. CO is odourless and colourless so it can be quite difficult to sense before it is too late.

There are symptoms for Carbon monoxide poisoning however, these include:

headaches

vomiting

tiredness

dizziness

There may also be some tell-tale signs to watch out for with the boiler. If you can see

a yellow flame in the boiler

increased condensation inside windows

the pilot light blows out frequently

yellow, brown staining around appliance

then you may have a problem. If you think that the boiler is faulty you need to

Switch off the boiler and do not use it until it has been fixed.

Open all doors and windows to ventilate the room - do not use the room especially to sleep in.

Visit your GP urgently and tell them that you believe your symptoms may be related to CO poisoning and request either a blood and/or breath sample

Servicing a boiler is specialised job and should be undertaken only by a qualified heating engineer. For oil boilers, the regulating organisation is OFTEC and it is recommended that you have your boiler serviced once a year or to the manufacturer's guidelines.
