The Importance of Being True to our Internal Age and How we Style Ourselves

On MSNs home page recently someone had had a lot of fun pairing up celebrities that were born in the same year but who look ten years apart in age. Poor Prince Edward was paired with Brad Pitt not fair guys! No one wants to be compared with Brad Pitt! But it is striking how much older the prince looks. Florence Welch of the Machine fame is paired with Megan Fox and again Florence appears to have a good ten years on the Transformers star.

There are comparisons between those who have made plastic surgery an addiction and those who have decided to remain a little truer to what nature gave them. Heidi Montag who famously had ten plastic surgery procedures in one day now looks 10 years older than singer/songwriter Emmy Rossum the article suggests. They are both only 25. And then Paris Hilton (30) whose rhinoplasty, many would think very successful and which goes a long way to making her look 10 years younger than the same aged Chelsea Clinton.

It's all a bit of fun but misses one of life's fundamental truths: that some of us are born older than others. (And I don't mean that like my three boys, who held on for weeks 3 weeks after their due dates before deigning to make an appearance into the world!) Take Aston Merrygold from JLS, is he ever going to look anything other than a boy? Think of other men who have that same sort of boyish charm What about Ant and Dec? They are still trading on being teenagers despite having reached the age of 35. And amongst those who are older still like Cliff Richard or Alan Titchmarsh you can still see that what makes these men attractive is never going to be a suave debonair elegance but a cheeky chappy' youthful looking Gamin twinkle in the eye. They will always look younger than they are.

Lady Gaga on the other hand is only 24 but looks far wiser. I don't mean this in an unkind way it's just that she has a look about her as if she has somehow been round the universal system before and knows things others don't. You can't imagine Lady Gaga playing Tinkerbell in a panto but she would make a wonderful Cruella deVille. Whereas Carey Mulligan would fit the Tinkerbell part just fine. Carey is now 25 but I bet she still gets ID'd!

The interesting this is that our internal age, our state of grown upness if you like, is very closely linked to our physical appearance. I am married to one of those boyish looking men. He will be 50 this year has a full on job in the corporate world and is constantly taken for nearly 40. Part of what I enjoy about our life together ( Well - most of the time I enjoy it!!) is that give him 1 glass of wine and he immediately starts messing about like a 4 year old. Inside he is a little boy making a joke about everything, it's his coping mechanism (and perhaps you would find it irritating) but the truth is his personality matches his appearance. And I see this all the time with both my male and female clients.

The importance of understanding how old we are internally is huge when we are shopping for clothes. Imagine dressing Amy Winehouse in delicate ditsy prints or lacy frills! It just doesn't work whereas Carey would look feminine and girlie. It's important if we want to look credible to dress who we are as well as our body shape. When we understand who we are dressing we feel confident, at home in our clothes and know we look right.

Maybe on the inside we are 10 years older than someone born in the same year. You know what enjoy it!
