The Importance of Learning Guitar Maintenance
The Importance of Learning Guitar Maintenance
Many guitarists, both new and experienced, jump into playing guitar knowing very little about the instrument they have chosen to play and how to properly take care of it. But the truth is, understanding both acoustic guitar maintenance and electric guitar maintenance is very important to the health of your guitars. If you don't take care of your guitar from the start then guitar maintenance can become a big chore later down the line.
Of course one option is to pay a professional to handle the setup of your guitar. But what about the simple and frequent tasks like changing guitar strings. Do you really want to have to take your guitar to the music store every time this needs to be done or would you rather just learn how to change guitar strings the proper way from the beginning?
Fortunately the task of changing guitar strings is not too difficult to learn and other setup and guitar maintenance tasks are taught in some very good courses as well. When changing guitar strings you want to get the right guide for the job. Therefore, you should consider whether you will be changing acoustic guitar strings or changing electric guitar strings.
When learning how to change acoustic guitar strings you will discover that most acoustic guitar strings are held in by pegs at the bridge of the guitar. The force of the string itself holds it in place and keeps the peg from slipping out. As soon as the tension on the string is relieved the string is able to come right out of the bridge. When changing electric guitar strings you will usually thread the strings through a slot in the back of the guitar. Often this is far easier than an acoustic would be.
When threading your guitar strings through the post at the end of the neck on your guitar there are several different ways to ensure they get locked into place properly. However, the most important part to remember is to make sure you turn the machine head in the proper direction so that the string is on the side of the post that faces toward the center of the neck. By making sure they face the right direction you are ensuring that the guitar will stay in tune easier and that the strings are less likely to break. You also ensure that you don't cause any damage to the guitar as well.
One last thing to consider that many people don't think about is that guitars are made of wood. Yes, I know that is so surprising. It is amazing how many people don't think about it though and store their guitars in dry or hot places for extended periods of time. This can dry and crack a guitar and even cause worse problems if they get too hot since guitars are held together by glue.
Guitar maintenance can often be an overlooked subject. If you take care of your guitar now then your guitar is sure to have great sound and serve you quite well for years to come. So make sure you take the time to learn the proper ways to take care of your guitar.
