The Importance of Titles and Headlines in SEO
The Importance of Titles and Headlines in SEO
But it's also very important that the title and headline are interest to humans as well as search engine spiders. This is also important for subtitles and further descriptions of the headline. There are several reasons for this too.
One way in which the wording of your headlines, sub headlines, titles and subtitles is important is in how your webpage will appear in the SERP, not just how high. If you have good keywords and SEO for the page there is a good chance your page will appear high in the listings. Maybe not #1 or #20, but no
matter how high it is it will only be chosen by the searcher for reading if the title or headline or description is interesting to them.
Case in point: You search the term "investing tips." Let's say that on the first page of ten webpages displayed you read three different titles and headlines:
1) "Investor Tips: Trading in Fast-Moving Markets - What You Need to Know About Trading In Volatile Times. Ten Tips on Hot IPOs, high tech markets, risk evaluation ..."
2) "Bob's General Investing Tips - I have written many meaningful articles that contain some useful investment tips for you. I have taken out most of the parts on options because I think there are other ways to ..."
3) "Investment Forums at phnsit.com - Here you can register for access to investment information ... If you want to learn some of the ins and outs of investment. Use our forum to share your investing experiences with our community."
If you had to choose one of these three webpages from the information given above which one would it be? Now, after you choose remember that you had a reason for choosing the one you selected. This type reasoning causes the searcher to pass over uninteresting headlines and titles even to go to a lower
ranking webpage, perhaps the next page of the SERP to find something interesting.
If a number #1 webpage in a SERP gets few hits, but a number #7 or a number #27 gets a lot of hits, especially for it's lower position, then the search algorithm will begin to take this into account. The traffic that your subtitles and sub headlines can generate may actually raise it in the rankings. This increase in traffic can also get incoming links to your webpages from appreciative visitors - who came to your website, not as a number #1 but a number #27.
The online headlines and titles of your webpages are critical to your SEO. Many webmasters have had to create interesting titles and headlines that leave out some of the keywords and still get good traffic and a raise in the SERP.
Some titles can be keyword perfect but make for very uninteresting reading - so you have to tweak your headlines and subtitles for both spiders and human readers to get the best possible results. This means that an excellent headline can attract readership and ultimately more incoming links - more than a poor headline with the exact keyword phrase at the very beginning of the headline.
