The Important Purpose Of Spill Containment Pallets

Spilling any kind of chemical, whether dangerous to people or not

, is not something that will help the overall productive cycle you are trying to maintain on the manufacturing line. Even if it is not unhealthy, it will present a slip hazard and will get in the way of your safety record being as good as it could otherwise be. A set of spill containment pallets can be a large part of ensuring the safety of your employees and certification in the eyes of many governmental regulatory agencies.

The spilling of a chemical, from a barrel or drum, usually occurs during dispensing. It can also happen while it is being transported, often in unqualified ways. Most chemicals must have a primary and a secondary containment system involved in all operations involving anything other than sitting on the shelf.

Moving a pallet of barrels or just the individual drum with a drum attachment on the forklift, can expose it to many things that may puncture this container. Without the secondary container, it spills. A spill is simply the uncontrolled leaking of that chemical or substance unto the floor or other processing surface.

A spill containment pallet is simply a platform, much like a regular pallet, that has poly grates inserted into the top that allows leaking drums a place to leak without getting on the floor. These are made from the non reactive polyethylene substance that will withstand a lot of beating. It has the reservoir that will hold as much fluid that is in the barrels it is holding.

These are made in sizes ranging from one drum to eight and are usually the safety yellow color. They are easy to empty, clean and put back into service. They give the average manufacturing plant the ability to recover form a leak because it does not get onto the floor or other surfaces, thus not impacting anyone and not having to shut down the processing line.

This is an easy way of providing the secondary containment that is called for in all FDA, EPA or USDA regulations. The effect of not having all sorts of forms to fill out will save time and money as well. Since safety is one of the first jobs of any set of employees and management, this is a good method to employ.

The barrels should be stored on these pallets and dispensed from them. These containment pallets are large enough to protect the drums from normal things that may impact them and are easily moved around with the average forklift. A special area should also be set aside to maintain the pallets, themselves, as they will need to be cleaned after their cargo has been used up.
