The Important Role Of Swimming Pool Covers
Swimming pool covers play a very important part in the pool maintenance routine.
Used correctly they will minimize the time you spend keeping the pool clean and the cost of chemical water treatments.
Some pool covers will also, under certain conditions, raise the pool water temperature, whilst others may help insulate the pool and maintain the existing temperature.
The main types of pool covers are as follows:
Pool Solar covers: Manufactured using a high grade polyethylene material that looks like a heavy duty bubble wrap. These covers are available in a variety of thicknesses from 200 micron to 600 micron, offering varying degrees of robustness. All of these covers will help to raise pool water temperature, and help to reduce evaporation and heat loss. Evaporation accounts for 90% of heat loss from swimming pools. Usually used on domestic outdoor pools.
Heat retention covers: Manufactured using a thick, typically 5mm or 6mm, laminated foam material that helps to maintain the pool water temperature by cutting out evaporation. Usually used on commercial indoor pools, but is also effective on outdoor pools.
Liquid pool covers: These so called covers are actually a thin liquid that floats on the surface of the pool and helps to prevent evaporation (see above). Not very effective due to loss from the pool surface via filtration and skimming, people entering and leaving the pool, and loss due to wind action.
Winter covers: Most commonly manufactured using a mesh fabric that allows the rainwater to drain through, and webbing straps that tension and support the cover, preventing it from sagging into the poolwater. Prevents leaves and other debris from entering the pool water, causing discolouring of the water and pool surfaces. Essential to keep your pool clear and clean over the winter shutdown period. Correct use of a cover and chemicals allow quick re opening of your pool in the springtime.
Above Ground Pool Covers: Covers are available for small pools such as the Intex range of splash pools. The solar covers are usually at the bottom end of the thickness range and are less robust. Winter covers that are solid plastic with a central drain are also available.
