Often when deciding to book a short weekend break or a nice long holiday

, we a drawn to the larger highly advertised hotels for our accommodation. We often neglect to search around and when looking for something more intimate and personal, often take too little thought in our choices. Be it concerns over price or the assumption that certain types of accommodation will not be available in the area we would prefer to stay; there are many issues to consider.

In recent years there has been a large rise in the popularity of boutique hotels. That is to say, hotels that offer something different from the mainstream chain hotels. They offer a more personal, stylised and unique place to stay. Originally they were typically the reserve of people of a higher income. However, in recent years there has been a rise in the number of boutique hotels, especially in large cities such as London, Birmingham and Edinburgh. They are quite often referred to as "design hotels" or " lifestyle hotels" as they reflect more of a personality than their chain hotel counterparts. If you are looking for something a bit different, that offers services and facilities with character, then a boutique hotel might just be for you. Often featuring a restaurant or a lounge bar that is usually open to the public as well as guests, they thrive on capturing the buzz of the scene of which they help to create.

A simple search on the Internet turns up hundreds of boutique hotels and these websites (especially of the independent boutique hotels) will give a thorough and detailed representation of what you are paying for. As the popularity and success of boutique hotels has greatly increased, recently due to their affordability, many mainstream hotel companies have tried to emulate the individuality of facilities that is on offer, to try and capture some of the market share.

These prove to be a worthy competitor for the independents and both have their advantages, whether it"s their location, or what they offer in terms of rooms, space and understanding of the customers needs. However it is the overall experience of finding somewhere a little different and luxurious, at an affordable cost which makes searching for your ideal boutique hotel worthwhile.

Let"s face it, when you stay away from home, you cannot properly relax without a decent nights sleep in comfortable surroundings. A kind of home from home can provide for a completely different experience than staying in your average run of the mill hotel, the uncomfortable worn out mattress, stale sheets, and cheap carpets. Your hotel is your base for your stay away, so why shouldn"t you choose to stay somewhere that is representative of your life style and your personality? Somewhere that exudes comfort, individuality and isn"t just a conveyor belt of bodies in beds. A bit of a break from the norm and allowing ourselves to be swept away on the vibe created by a hotel with its own personality. It is good to know that there are so many different places to stay, with their personable staff (quite often family run businesses) and with an atmosphere to fit.

For many boutique hotels would appear to be the preserve of the rich and famous, and many, it is true will err on the expensive side. However for a comfortable stay, a more dedicated service, nicer surroundings and space which is not designed just to squash as many people into a confined space as possible, boutique hotels could be for you.
