The Ins and Outs of Shipping With International Logistics Companies

You went to Italy during the summer and decided that you loved it so much that you and your beloved are packing your things and moving there for good

. Wait a minute...how are you going to get your things there?

You're going to use an international logistics company! International logistics companies specialize in getting your cargo where it needs to be and doing it safely. You'll need to ship your car, your household items, furniture, and clothes, but since all of that won't fit in the overhead compartment, you'll have to have your things sent by ship. Don't worry, it's relatively simple.

Since your things will be going overseas in big containers that the international logistics company will provide for you, you'll want to make sure you pack everything away in boxes. Corrugated cardboard boxes are really great for this. You can find them at Walmart or any packaging supply store. Before you pack fragile items like glasses and china, you'll want to wrap them in bubble wrap or multiple sheets of newspaper. Some companies will even recommend that if you have a lot of boxes, you can place them on pallets and shrink wrap them together for easier shipping. For your bigger items such as furniture, it's recommended that you wrap them in heavier plastic sheeting. You can find plastic sheeting online or at a local plastic supply store.

Once all of your things are packed away, you'll have to figure out what type of shipping container you want the company to provide you with. They will most often offer a twenty foot container and a forty foot container. If your home is only one or two bedrooms, a twenty foot container should do. If it's any larger than that, you'll need to consider a forty foot container.

Picking a shipping method is the easiest part of the process. You can generally have your things loaded onto a cargo ship one of three ways. You can have them live-loaded, which means a driver will come to your home and wait while you load the container. You can have them dropped off, which means the company will bring you a shipping container and come pick it up whenever you're ready. Or you can have your items warehouse or terminal loaded, which means that you bring them to the port and the company will load them into the container for you.
