The Internet Feels Like A Used Car Lot

The Internet Feels Like A Used Car Lot

The Internet Feels Like A Used Car Lot

This article is going to be an expression of frustration and somewhat of a rant. As much as I want to say that the gold rush of the online riches is something new, I know that it has a very long history.

My first taste of 'Internet marketing' was back my senior year of High School when AOL came out for Windows 3.1. I remember being psyched about getting on my 14.4 baud modem and getting on the web. I remember the sound of that old modem finally connecting and AOL giving me that famous 'welcome'.

There were these chat rooms. I'm sure they are still there in some form or another. I haven't been on AOL in years. These chat rooms were filled with spam scrolling down faster than a rainstorm in a hurricane. If you typed anything that remotely looked like conversation, you had to have the eyes of a cat to catch any sort of real response. 18/M/CA Looking to chat in private.

From day one the internet has been a way for people to market and make money. It seems to have grown at speeds no one could have ever imagined. It has changed the world many times over.

I could just be the email lists that I am part of but lately, it just seems that everyone is trying to sell me something. If it isn't directly, it's indirectly through dripping. It really makes me wonder if there is anyone left that really has no agenda at least some of the time and see the value of the internet for what it was meant to be. A form of communication.

I know some of you are saying that it's just the nature of the beast and that if I don't like it I should just get off. That is not going to happen. From the moment I first connected I literally fell in love with being online.

I was talking to my sister who lives in a very remote part of Wisconsin. She struggles to get online. It happens frequently that she is not able to connect for days at a time. I personally would feel as though a big part of me was missing if I were in that predicament.

I am here to tell you that there are some of us left. There are actually some people who are online that aren't trying to sell something every second of the day. There are some people who genuinely like to add value to others lives and find it very enjoyable to do so. I pride myself in knowing I am able to search them out and connect.

I have found myself unsubscribing from many of the lists I have been on for some time. It feels like the authors have lost their minds! I don't say this to be mean but I just get so aggravated at the fact that every morning I have to delete 90% of my emails to avoid being tempted to buy something.

Here are some lists that will never be deleted though.

I've really done some serious spring cleaning to my email subscriptions and feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. If those folks that I have unsubscribed to find a way to come back and prove that they aren't just a bunch of money hounds, I'll come across them again somehow. Perhaps then they will be worthy of sending me emails!

Have fun today and unsubscribe! You'll feel better.
