Moving across the desert sands one comes across the imposing entrance to the Mamluk castle and whose towers on either side are found to be paying tribute to the half-moon. It is the Hashemite that have left their mark on the region and their coat of arms can still be sighted above the castle entrance.

The desert also holds a treat for all Hollywood fans. Camping out at Wadi Rum has become a pilgrimage of sorts for them. Here, fans come to feel at one with idols such as Lawrence of Lawrence of Arabia fame and Indiana Jones, the crafter treasure hunter himself. Besides getting reacquainted with their on-screen idols, tourists also take time out to attack the desert dunes in the company of ace drivers at the wheel.

The instantly identifiable King Hussein International Airport is the connecting gateway between Aqaba and the rest of the world. With Lebanon being a short haul away from this historic city, it is no surprise to find many a tourist coming in from Beirut. Given that such visits are mostly over the weekend or may extend by a couple of days, tourists are usually known to travel light.
