The Introduction Of Certified Timber In The Uk

There was a time not too many years back when people in general paid little mind

to where the timber the products, and homes they bought and owned was coming from or the circumstances surrounding how it was harvested and milled. The collective feeling was that agencies were in place to insure that the environment was being protected.

The fact is that while there were several international organizations involved with documenting activities like the destruction of the planets rain forests, by and large all they could do is watch and take videos and photographs. What was needed was a system that could actually bring the chainsaws of illegal lumber cutters to a stop.

As it turned out one of the most effective methods for stopping the wanton mayhem wasn't some policing agency that had the power to fine, and, or incarcerate timber pirates because the fact was that many of them were and still are operating illegally. What finally worked to the extent that it has was informing the public, and giving them the choice of what lumber to use when they shopped.

So now certified timber is big business in the UK, as business operators are becoming ever more aware of the fact that people will in fact pay a premium price for peace of mind. It's not just hardwoods for consumer items like furniture either because even softwoods like building stand from Canada are now available certified.

Yet one more offshoot of this trend is that ever since that lumber importers and retailers discovered the extent and the growth potential of the certified timber market niche they have been working to supply a wider variety of a much higher grade product. So what this means now is that everything from premium exotic hardwood flooring to grade-A framing fir is now readily available in the UK.

Home builders and property speculator are also now discovering that in a tighter market, using certified timber in the UK gives them just one more marketing edge over their competitors. They also are making the pleasant discovery that the type of buyer who goes out of their way to go with certified timber is also the type that is willing to pay extra for the building to get it.

You see employees, and customers who in the past simply admired a hardwood floor, or cabinets in a business that they worked in or patronized now want to know more. They want to know if the materials that went into the work were certified and also they want to be assured that they were verifiably so, all the way through the supply line.

In fact the way things are going now it won't be long until uncertified lumber will be looked upon in much the same way as a stool made from an elephants foot, or the skin of a rare jungle cat hanging on a wall is today. Something that were accepted by past generations that is now seen as thoughtless and abhorrent by a far more informed, and enlightened general public.
