The Ip Phone: How Calls That Once Cost The Earth Are Now Free

One of the best things about the internet from a consumer point of view is the way

in which it allows us to get many of the things we would usually have to pay for free of charge.

Communicating with a loved one who lives a long distance away has been, until recently, very costly. Long-distance phone calls can cost a considerable amount of money, but now we can chat for virtually no cost at all on VoIP phones, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol.

This technology takes the analogue sounds you produce when you talk into a handset, turns them digital and transmits them over the internet to whoever you wish to converse with.

There are three main types of this phone on the market today. Firstly, there is the IP phone. The IP phone looks just the same as a regular phone; it has a handset as well as a cradle and buttons, but instead of having the usual RJ-11 connectors a phone has, an IP phone has an RJ-45 Ethernet connector.

These phones connect straight to the router of your computer and come with the hardware and software you need to make an IP call.

The simplest kind of calling across the internet you can do is with an Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA) which lets you connect a normal handset to your computer to use as a VoIP phone.

This offers the user a very straightforward set up.

The third kind is simple computer-to-computer methods, and all you need is speakers, a microphone, a sound card and of course a good internet connection.

The internet has changed the face of consumerism as we once knew it. Think about how much the way in which we consume music has changed, or how the way we get information is today compared with a few years ago. Once upon a time, the only way to research was to pay for books or visit the library; now we simply conduct an internet search lasting only a couple of seconds and are presented with the information we desire.

It's likely that IP phone technology will replace the traditional telephone industry more or less completely one day. Until then, there's no reason not to jump on the bandwagon and harness the power of the internet to make long-distance phone calls for free. The amount of money you save each year could be a considerable sum, particularly if you have relatives abroad such as a child on a gap year or who is studying abroad.
