The Iphone 4s Battery Issue And The Fix

Complaints are flooding Apple about the iPhone 4S battery life

, or lack thereof. Although iPhone 4S sales hit record highs and have had mostly positive reviews, owners have been reporting big problems with the iPhone 4S battery life.

Owner forums have been posting that the iPhone 4S battery lasted for about two-and-a-half hours of Internet usage, 30 minutes of talk time and five hours on standby before being drained. So whats up? Is it a batch of bad batteries or is the IOS 5 buggy?

Apple is investigating the iPhone 4 S battery problem. In comparison to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S battery performance is substantially less. (See chart.) According to an article published by British News site, The Guardian, Apple engineers are contacting some iPhone 4S owners to try to solve problems with battery life on the new device, after some people have seen dramatic drops in longevity compared to previous models. One owner has told the Guardian that Apple contacted him directly and asked him to install a monitoring program on the phone to try to diagnose the problem, which is so far unexplained.

"My battery life was extremely poor - 10% drop in standby every hour. I noticed that the usage figure was roughly half that of standby, even when the phone was not being used, so I assumed something was crashing or running in the background. I switched off all the new features including Siri and location services, but it was still really poor. I also tried setting up a clean phone with no apps but it is still really poor. I then got a call from a senior [Apple] engineer who said he had read my post and was 'reaching out' to users for data and admitted this was an issue (and that they aren't close to finding a fix!) and asked lots of questions about my usage and then asked if he could install the file below and that he would call back the day after to retrieve the info. I extracted the file from my Mac after a sync and emailed it to him. He was incredibly helpful and apologetic in the typical Apple way!"

The iPhone 4S battery problem is an annoyance, but not a disqualifier. The popularity of the iPhone 4S wont be hurt by the poor battery. iPhone owners are a loyal group. The biggest culprit for the battery drain appears to be Setting Time Zone update is operating even when there is no chance the user would have moved to a different time zone. If true, this could explain the poor battery life of the iPhone 4S. Already iPhone 4S owner forums are posting work-arounds and fix-its for the battery performance problem. The solution for now seems to be manually switching off the automatic time zone updates located at Settings -> Location Services -> scroll to bottom to System Services -> Setting Time Zone.

Having a great Smartphone with poor battery performance is so inconvenient. Hopefully Apple will fix the problem with the IOS 5 and all will be well. In the meantime, yes, you can carry a charger around with you and hope to find a place to plug it in, but it seems like they should build Smartphones (Android included) with better battery performance. It doesnt seem very smart to me. However, if you have one of the new iPhone 4S phones, you can always buy a iPhone 4 Power Charging Case which has a built in back-up battery in it. You simply charge it and when your iPhone 4S battery goes low, it automatically kicks in to give you another 1500mAh of charge time. How cool is that?
