Since the iPhone iPhonefirst launched in 2007

, popularity for the smartphone has been rapidly growing, and now with the latest version of the device iPhone 4 demand has peaked. One of the most popular features of the iPhone is Apples App Store.

There are a variety of applications, some free and some with a cost, available for users to download to their devices and fine tune their phone. The App Store was released in July 2008 with 500 downloadable apps available. Since then, the App Store has grown substantially. There are currently around 225,000 third party apps available in the iPhone App Store, and there have been 5 billion downloads made since its launch. One billion of these were hit in the first 9 months, with the following 4 billion plus downloads being made just over a year later.

There is a wide range of apps available; apps specifically for mums and dads which are designed to help teach young children, apps for aspiring cooks, a variety of games and apps designed for music, just to name a few. Users will find that most apps are free, with some of the more advanced applications incurring a small fee of around 2.99 each.

The massive popularity of the App Store is unlikely to decline any time soon, especially with the release of the latest iPhone 4 which has given Apple its most successful product launch yet, selling 1.7 million units within the first three days.

Users of the iPod, iPod Touch and the iPad also have access to the App Store, which allows for an even wider target which in turn has helped with the growth of the store.

With the overall popularity of the iPhone continuously growing and the increase in availability of downloadable apps, the usage of the App Store is likely to continue being at the heart of Apple and iPhone for the foreseeable future.
