The Jewel Of Latin America

Located in the northwestern region of South America is Ecuador

. It lies on the equator between Colombia and Peru. It has been called the Emerald of Latin America as it has lush greenery and being nestled on the Pacific Ocean coastline.

There are many destinations located all across Ecuador, each with its own treasure for the visitors to its shores. Here are some of the most popular tourist spots in the country:

The Cotopaxi is the world's highest active volcano. It has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also another World Heritage site is the Galapagos Island, where Charles Darwin was able to formulate his famous thesis about the survival of the fittest.

The capital city of Quito is rich in historical landmarks, many of them colonial era buildings located downtown. The city can be toured by the Teleferico or cable car that brings tourists to the highest point in the city. From here, tourists can view the landscape from the vantage point up in the sky.

The city of Guavaquil is the shopper's paradise. The central area is Malecon 2000, where there are food shops, boutiques and other bazaars. The shops are open for all but do be very careful when buying, as many of the branded items are knock-offs. Also located here is the Bahia or Informal Market but it may not be advisable as a destination for tourists as there are many snatchers or pickpockets. In this area though, prices are much cheaper, from clothes to accessories to electronics. Haggling is a way of business in the city.

For the extreme adventure enthusiasts, then Banos is the city to go to in Ecuador. Here, adrenaline junkies can choose from river rafting, mountain climbing or even outdoor trekking. You need to be prepared though as the outdoors may be dangerous for the novice adventurer, so get all your vaccinations in order before going out to nature. Another favorite place in the city is the hot springs that is open to the public. If you want a bit more privacy, there are private bathhouses for better accommodations.

For a bit more laid back nature adventure, then Ibarra should be on your itinerary. Located in the Imbabura province, the locale offers community tourism such as adventure tours or even indigenous tour packages. Particular areas to visit for family rafting, swing jumping, kayaking, group trekking or even just picnicking are Otavalo, Intag and Cotacachi.

For fun in the sun, then the best areas to go to in Ecuador are Bahia de Caraquez, Manta, Crucita, San Jacinto and San Clemente. Located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the wide expanse of beaches are dotted with inexpensive hotel accommodations, great food and friendly locals.

Now you know why Ecuador is considered a jewel in South America. The locales provide choices for each tourist coming into the country. Each city has its own history and beauty that enriches the visitor to the Jewel of Latin America, Ecuador.
