Bingo in the modern form found its origin in the United States of America. It was called beano' initially. The game was actually played in the fairs in the country sides. Here each player selected a numbered disc present in cigar box. They would mark their cards with beans. They shouted beano' if they won. . However, the game's actual origin dates back to Italy in 1530. The game in its archaic form is still played in Italy over the weekends. The games then moved to France where it also became quite popular in the end of the 18th century. It was called Le Lotto there. The game was played in Germany. But it had an educating value here rather than just entertainment. It was used to teach children mathematics and spellings.

The game moved to the American soil in 1929. It was played for the first time there in a carnival in Atlanta. Georgia. Edwin Lowe, a toy salesman in New York renamed the game as bingo when he heard some one mispronouncing it as bingo rather then beano. He thereafter devised some bingo cards with the help of a Math professor in Columbia University called Carl Leffler. Leffler had made almost 6,000 cards. According to rumor he became a loon in the course of making cards.

Later a priest based in Pennsylvania asked Lowe if Bingo can be played in churches to raise funds. As a result it started being played in churches which made it immensely popular. In 1934, around 10,000 bingo games were played weekly. Today In the United States alone more than $ 90 million is spent in the games of bingo each week.

Bingo was actually played in the halls that offered them. But after the advent of the internet, the game can be played over the PC by sitting in the comforts of your home.
