The Joy Of An Ex - Domestic Violence/wife Assault/abuse
This chapter is an overview of support organizations and shelters in Ontario for women and children who are victims of domestic violence
. Domestic violence, wife assault and abuse constitute a significant social problem.
While aggressive behaviour by women towards men in couple relationships does occur, it is less prevalent. A small minority of husband abuse cases follow a classic long-term aggressor-victim pattern, with the wife as aggressor. Men in these situations should contact a crisis centre and get legal advice and counseling.
Violence carries with it intent for physical injury or harm. Abuse is a broader concept of power and control (including emotional abuse with verbal put-downs, threats of violence and financial or economic control). Wife assault and abuse happens in all education and income brackets and in all religious and ethnic groups. Violence affects all family members whether they show the effects or not.
Children who witness abuse and violence are as traumatized as much as they would be if they had suffered the abuse themselves. Children from abusive homes are at a greater risk of abusing or being abused.

A shelter is a safe place to stay for people who might be hurt or harmed if they remain in their homes. Many shelters are for women who live with abusive partners and their children. Shelters offer counselling and group support on-site and refer clients to legal, health and other services. The majority of shelters offer the following in-house services to women residents: individual short term counselling, advocacy, parenting skills, and housing referral.
Services offered to resident children include indoor and outdoor recreational space, individual counseling, group counseling, and programmes for children who have witnessed abuse or experienced violence. Shelters also offer outreach work including supplying information, accompanying victims to court, meeting with clients to discuss possibilities/options, and participating in drop-in centres.
Even if you don't think you want or need to go to a women's shelter or sexual assault centre, you can call your local service to ask questions or just to talk.
