In a short story by science fiction author Isaac Asimov, two men realize that comedy is an experiment being conducted by some unseen alien observers. And as soon as they realize they are being experimented on, the experiment is rendered null and void, and humour is no more. While this sounds quite farfetched, as is the nature of science fiction, it does raise a good question: what makes something funny?
