We cannot be fighting brush fires all the time. In other words, we are not effective if we are doing those things that are unimportant and not urgent either.

Urgent matters are mostly real and are put right in front of you. They demand your immediate attention and response. They sap your well-being and can be over-whelming. Often somebody's action has become your problems. Most of the time they are relatively unimportant and do not warrant an immediate attention. Because of your ineffectiveness things that were not urgent initially have now turned out to be your nightmare.

Sometime unimportant matters are fun to do and most people would seize this opportunity for a breather to escape the pressure of the urgent and important matters on hand.


Important matters are things that has got to do with results-orientated. They are normally not a pleasant thing to do and most people would push it aside and procrastinate since it is not urgent and probably because you might think that for example, your 5-year marketing plan can wait since you cannot visualize right now what would it be like something so far into the future.

Therein laid the potential danger of casting asides non-urgent but are important matters. It may manifest and rears its ugly head when the time comes and left you unprepared for the eventuality.

Unfortunately, by the time you made your respond to these matters it would be too late. You should have taken action and implement things when the matter was still considered "non-urgent". You might think that it is important but yet there is no urgency on your part to take proactive actions.

Proactive actions involve seizing the opportunity to plan and scheduled your priorities. Remember that we should be the master of our schedule and not a slave to our schedule.

Do not be spending your time reacting to things that you assume that they are important but in reality they are all along matters being imposed on the priorities and urgency of others.

Effective marketer stays out of doing unimportant and matters that are not urgent but concentrate on important matters but are also not urgent too. So it is very crucial not to let the important matters turn urgent and become visible.

Effective marketer delegate and outsource to other people because they feel it takes too much time and effort and most importantly they could do a better job than you do. Effective delegation would free you the time and energy to concentrate on other higher leverage activities like planning and generating ideas for a new product.


Effective marketer would not wait until the last moment before he takes action.

Short-term planning and long-term planning and preventive maintenance which every marketer ought to do are seldom done because they are not urgent. They know it is extremely important for every marketer to be thinking ahead and anticipate any problems or competitions in the marketplace.

Do your research on your competitors and industry consistently before you are left behind from the latest development in your niche which might result in rendering your product and services turn redundant or obsolete. They may be some newer ways to do your marketing which you may be caught unaware and you would probably start to panic whilst others may have the advantage of a good head-start than you.

The key to a marketer's success is to schedule your priorities and not to prioritize what is on your schedule. In other words you prioritize your preventive measure--things that are non-urgent in nature but are important.
