The Key To Healthy Skin

It's habits and lifestyle that determine most the type of skin you have

. While genetics does play a big part, too, controlling and maintaining beautiful healthy skin is often how you treat it.

The secret to healthy, glowing skin relies on cleansing, exfoliating, moisutrizing and protection. These are the steps of any effective skincare regimen. While protection is the same for all, slathering on a minimum 30SPF sunscreen to block harmful UV rays, the other steps slightly vary depending on skin type.

Oily Skin

Shininess and enlarged prominent pores are indications that you have oily skin. While you may think that washing your face is the only way to deal with this skin type, it's also important to consider the other things you do. Control that sheen by washing only twice a day with an oil-free cleanser and apply a moisturizer designed for oily skin afterward. Exfoliate every other day with a gentle scrub, being very careful not to tug the skin, and apply a mask once a week to eliminate trapped debris and dirt.

Dry or Normal Skin

Though you may be blessed with tight pores, those with dry skin have a tendency to suffer from redness, flakiness and an earlier development of wrinkles (gasp!). Sebum production is insufficient, so you'll need to wash with a creamy cleanser designed for dry skin once a day and apply a rich moisturizer afterward. Once a week, exfoliate gently and treat your skin with an intense moisturizing mask once a week. You'll need this, especially in the drier winter months. And don't forget the sunscreen every time you go out!

Sensitive Skin

Acne, rosacea, blotchiness - if you don't follow the right regimen, these problems are a constant source of concern for sensitive skin. That's why it's important that those with this skin type avoid products with fragrance, parabens and other ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction. Cleanse once a day with a gentle product, and use a light lotion. Exfoliation should be done only if recommended by your dermatologist, and if not, seek methods like laser treatments that may be safer and more effective.
