The Key To Working With Others

When working with others, it's wise to go out of your way to be helpful. A lot of people have a natural tendency to balk at this (their task is not your responsibility after all, or so goes the defense), but a working environment in which people help each other out and cooperate saves everyone a whole of time, and for many reasons. One is sheer proximity. It's simply faster if I spend a couple of minutes finishing up your task if you're way over on the other side of the store. Perhaps the biggest benefit of helping others is that you learn their jobs. When everyone basically knows what everyone else is doing, there should never be a delay in the workflow. Of course, being assigned to specific workstations is fundamental to most work environments, but what we're talking about here is maximum efficiency.

I'm not a believer in the notion that if you can increase efficiency, then management can increase the workload. There are seasons, days, and ebbs and flows to any workplace and I believe in reasonable production limits in direct proportion to staff members. The point is that without increased efficiency, workers become haggard.

There are two dimensions to personal relationships in the workplace: professional and social. Actually, these are describable but in practice they're a little blurred. There is a correlation in the sense that the more professional, or mature, the workforce members are, the more likely they are to increase intimacy between each other and foster friendships. And animosity is very destructive in the workplace, so professionalism should be highly valued.

So how do you act professionally with others? Well, for starters it's always good to make a mental note of what a person is doing each time you see them and you are both on the clock. You can determine, if you have a few moments, if they need any help. You can also chit chat for a couple of minutes for a breather if both of you are free. If your coworker asks for help but you're busy, explain why and that you'll mention her needs to others. The bottom line here is to help others in a reasonable and efficient fashion. Set an example and live up to it.
