The King And His Many Wives
The Tudor era is almost certainly the most well known time in British history and
its heritage remains in the guise of books and historical documents to read and works of art, monuments and buildings which it is possible to see and take pleasure in to this day. Though not the only Tudor ruler, what comes after is a concise history of Henry the eighth and his six wives.
Henry was an intelligent and lively person and was able to converse in French and Latin confidently. He also performed and composed music. He was good at sports and also enjoyed hunting and jousting.
Henry was the second son and therefore was not expected to become king of England. Destiny deemed it otherwise as due to the death of his brother, Arthur, he became successor to Arthur's crown and spouse to his widow, Catherine of Aragon. They married in 1509 once receiving a special dispensation from the church of Rome.
Henry VIII and Catherine's only living child was Mary I, who was a staunch catholic and though she reigned as queen of England for a short time she managed to establish her own individual position in history. In her attempts to restore Britain to the catholic beliefs she put to death countless protestants which in turn did nothing to aid her in this quest, except to earn her the name of Bloody Mary that is!
Religion played a significant part in Tudor history, particularly for Henry. Catherine had not been able to produce a living male heir and Henry thought that he was being punished by God for getting married to his brothers wife. Henry believed that their relationship was not legal and must for that reason be null and void. The church of Rome was never to agree to this.
The primary reason for the Church of Englands split with Rome was Henry VIII's desire to divorce Catherine and get married to Anne Boleyn, who was already pregnant. Without the blessing of the church of Rome Henry instructed the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, to declare his marriage to Catherine was unlawful since she was the widow of his brother. He secretly wed Anne Boleyn soon after this.
Henry soon tired of her too because she was also unable to give him a male heir. Unbeknown to him at this time, Henry and Anne's only living child, a daughter, would turn out to be just as excellent a sovereign as any king would have been, some would say better - Elizabeth I.
In order to get rid of Anne he had her put under arrest on rather questionable charges of betrayal, treason and incest. Anne was found guilty and put to death at the Tower of London. Just over a week following the beheading Henry VIII wed Jane Seymour. She gave him his only legitimate son to survive babyhood and resolved the crisis surrounding the Tudor succession. Henry was distraught by Jane's death shortly following Edward's birth. In his will he stipulated that on his death he be buried with her at Windsor.
Let's not forget the remaining three wives: Anne of Cleves was next only to be divorced, Katherine Howard was executed for adultery and Henry VIII's sixth wife, Katherine Parr, survived him.
Whether or not Henry actually cherished any of his six wives is not that well known or spoken about in books on history, though it's alluded to that Jane Seymour was the one he loved - however as she was the only one of his wives to give him a living male successor that question still remains a mystery!
The Tudors are the most immediately recognisable of Englands kings and queens, in particular Henry the eighth as there is no mistaking him in the famous Holbein portrait. Nevertheless, notwithstanding Henry VIII's many other accomplishments during his sovereignty he will always be known as the king with many wives.
The Tudor age, as outlined in numerous history books to read, reveals to you the successful monarchs which ruled in this age.
