Season three was quite special featuring a short pre-credits vignette. The vignette had every new couple a week involved romantically. Season four announced that the show was being renewed after which it lasted two seasons. Post the show telecast, videos were released that had the characters disclosing the secrets that they never shared on the screen.

The show generated a great number of positive reviews. It went on to become one of the most popular shows in no time. Being a rare subject taken up on television, the show appealed to the TV viewers. The way the life of the lesbians was told in a very exciting manner and sincere efforts taken to represent them in a respectful manner worked.

The L Word was praised for focusing on more than just the sexual life of the lesbians. Relationships were given a higher importance which was appreciated and it was a meaningful story set against a trendy milieu. Though the show was unique and was received well, the theme songs and few dialogues that lacked elegance let down the fans.

The role of Tina Kennard won the best actress award for Laurel Holloman. The show was also nominated for the Satellite Awards for Best Television Series - Drama. Ossie Davis won the Emmys for outstanding guest actor in a drama series. He appeared in the role of Bette's father. Jennifer beals and Laurel Holloman, the lead lesbian pair also was awarded for the sexiest television scene.
