The Language of Successful Weight Loss

Very few people appreciate the incredible power that language has in determining whether we will succeed or fail in losing weight. The words we use at any given time have a massive impact on our lives. Our language not only shapes our lives, it quite literally creates it. The language we use sends signals to our neuro-system affecting the way we respond mentally and physically ie. in this instance affecting the way that we think or feel about weight loss and hence affecting our behaviour around it.

The message is simple: if you want to lose weight, change the language you use.

Here are some key examples:-

1. "I Have To Lose Weight" or "I Need To Lose Weight"

Many of us get to the stage where we feel that we simply "have" to lose weight or desperately "need" to lose weight, but using this kind of language is counter-productive. The words have to' sound like an order; they also remind us of all the things we have to' do that we don't want to do like cleaning the house or washing up or even going to work! The words need to' make things feel like a chore; again there are lots of things we need to do that we don't want to do, things that keep falling off our lists, for example, and making us feel guilty!

Change either of these to: "I want to lose weight" and you will be onto a winner!

2. "Diet"

Diet is a dirty word! Treat it like a really bad swear word. In fact set up a swear box and put some money in it every time you hear yourself using it! It's that detrimental!

So what makes the word diet' so bad? It's all the associations we have with dieting. Diets are boring, they're something we dread, something we put off, they're a chore, they're short-term, we associate them with failure all the times before that we've tried and failed to lose weight and/or keep it off and so on. Thus planning to go on a diet is one of the most de-motivational things you can do! No wonder they don't work!

Banish the word diet from your vocabulary and switch to a healthy eating plan for life.

3. "Can't"

The vast majority of my new clients tell me they "can't" lose weight or they "can't" lose weight and keep it off. But I don't believe them. I know they can. ("Can't is simply can with a t' on the end" as my mother always used to tell me!)

The problem is that the more you tell yourself that you can't do something, the more you believe it; and the more you believe in something, the more likely you are to try and prove yourself right! So if you keep telling yourself that you can't lose weight, you won't it's as simple as that!

Tell yourself that you can lose weight, find all the evidence to prove that statement right and you'll be well on your way to your ideal weight!

So, three key examples of how using the wrong language can guarantee the wrong result. The good news is that these three are three of the most common examples and the most detrimental. Change just these three and losing weight will suddenly become a whole lot easier. Try it and see!
