The Least Effective Fundraising Ideas For Nonprofit Organizations

Not all fundraising ideas are good ideas

Not all fundraising ideas are good ideas. In fact, some of the worst fundraising ideas for non profit organizations are still being used by nonprofits. Why? Because some nonprofits frequently focus on the easiest strategies to use, or they just fail to realize how terrible their ideas actually are. So now we will examine a few of the fundraising ideas that your organization should avoid.

Take the idea of getting employees to walk up and down the hallways, walk up to a bunch of people, and plead for charity. Terrible idea! approaching to people who are running chores, purchasing groceries, or on their way to work just annoys them. To be honest, some charities have built bad reputations by relying on such face-to-face fundraising and have even been accused of harassment. Even though a few individuals will likely agree to donate, most will just ignore your charity or say something rude. The concept could be more profitable by setting up a booth in front of a busy store and offering an item to sell, such as chocolate bars. Feeding people will draw visitors in, letting you to give them your pitch about your charity.

The area that really seems to mess up some nonprofits, is not thinking about how the product they are selling looks from the view of the purchaser. To give an example, a bake sell full of cookies and sweet baked goods may work for a children's charity but the idea would be frowned upon for a charity about diabetics. Such a charity could make a unique impression by baking sugar free versions of popular cookies and cakes instead. Besides, the best fundraising ideas for nonprofit organizations help remind people of your group. If you are giving away food, give a flyer, a brochure, or a Frisbee also.

A lot of the worst fundraising ideas are not horrible in and of themselves; they simply become so because of poor planning. Consider the car wash held in the rain or the nonprofit that tries to sell flowers in the dead of winter! (True story.) Simply by being aware of the local weather forecast, the car wash might have been successful. Instead of selling flowers in the winter, a nonprofit could have sold handmade scarves, holiday wrapping paper or even hot chocolate.

With nonprofits, technology has really made it easier for people to donate; however, not all methods get the same amount of trust by consumers. Take the idea of texting charitable donations, although the idea was popular during the earthquake tragedy, more and more people are becoming leery of the idea and are worried about being unwillingly registered for reoccurring donations. Others would just rather give in a way that supports the charity instantly, since text donations often take many months before they reach you! The fact that many phone carriers put a lot of limits on phone donations makes this idea less than perfect.

The trust factor also comes into play here, well known charities may find some success, smaller charities are less likely to find success with this method simply because they are less well known. To rapidly get the money your cause needs, allow contributions through your website; accepting debit, credit and online payment methods (such as PayPal), give donors the ability to donate as much as they want as often as they want.

In the end, bad fundraising ideas can be avoided by paying attention, avoiding aggressive tactics, planning for all situations and thinking about what works best for your organization.
