The Legend Of Lord Ayyappa
The Sabarimala Temple was dedicated to Lord Ayyappa by his foster father
, King Rajasekhara. Most of the information about this god centered on legends, there are many stories that revolve among his devotees, and most of them have variations as they passed down from generations to generations. But, still, there are some common concepts in the stories like he lived as a son and savior of the king of Pandalam.
It was believed that King Rajasekhara found the baby Ayyappa during one of his hunting trips in the forest. He found the baby along the riverbanks of Pampa. A radiant and delightful baby who was wearing a bell or mani around its neck. The king was delighted because he had no children of his own. Little did he know that this child was actually Dharmasastha who was the son of Shiva and Vishnu and was sent to earth to kill Mahishi.
The king was a good man and he was in doubt whether to get the child or leave it as it is. That was then a Sanyasi appeared and told him that he can take the child home and on its 12th birthday, its real destiny will be unfolded. He was given the name of Manikantan because of his bell and was educated in the palace on different academic and arts. His guru, who was very much impressed with his knowledge, realized that he was a divine child. When Manikantan asked him for any boon in return for teaching him, he asked for nothing but a cure for his son who was dumb. The divine child cured his son upon the promise that he will keep it a secret.
Meanwhile the king loved Manikantan so much and looked upon him as his eldest child that he decided to crown him as his successor to the throne. Not knowing that he was Ayyappa, a corrupt minister poisoned the mind of the queen who had given birth to a son at that time. They planned a scheme to get rid of the divine child no matter what!
Their scheme did not succeed for Shiva himself helped Ayyappa and he was able to kill Mahishi. The king was so worried about his son but was overjoyed when he saw him coming home. That was when the real identity of Ayyappa was revealed. He then disappeared to the forest and a temple was built in his honor.
