The Legendary Tigers Of Siberia

, there is one majestic cat that is nowhere to be seen on the continent. That is none other than the legendary tiger. Tigers are some of the largest animals on the planet and in the cat (Felidae) family, they rank as the largest. But, even within the caucus of these whiskered animals, there is one that has no rival, and that is the Siberian tiger a legend in all ramifications.

Also called the Amur tiger, the Siberian tiger is the very largest and the most massive of all the cats. Palaentologists also state that the tigers of Siberia are also some of the largest to have ever existed. The size is one feature of the Siberian tiger that is very amazing. They are regularly hitting over 300 kg and can be as long as 2 meters or even more. In many of the instances, the tail is also longer than a meter.

Yes, they are that massive! Found primarily in Siberia in the Far Eastern region of the Russian Federation, the Siberian tiger is truly a beauty to behold and a wonder beyond comprehension.

It has a very unique coat which is brownish-red or rusty-red with a tinge of yellow and black stripes all over. Unlike many of the other cats, the fur and coat of the Siberian tiger is somewhat pale, and this may have to do with the fact that they live in extremely cold environments -Siberia is one of the coldest places on earth. As the seasons change, the color and the shade of the fur and coat also get transformed. They are quite easy to identify even though they are now very rare and the numbers are said to be dwindling in many areas prompting conservation efforts by different nations, especially Russia and China.

A typical carnivore like other cats, the Siberian tiger is an exquisite hunter and preys on animals. The most common items on its diet include the sika deer, roe deer and even bears (especially the brown and black). It also feeds on smaller animals like rabbits, hares and even fish in some areas. When hunting, the Siberian tiger brings down large animals by delivering a fatal bite deep into the animals spinal cord. This action paralyzes the wapiti (or deer, if that happens to be the unfortunate victim) and give the dreaded cat the needed time to finish off the meal.

Considering the endangered status of the animal, there have been numerous conservation efforts to ensure the survival of one of the planet's last great cats. Massive efforts by governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have led to the collaring with radio transmitters, monitoring of range distribution and habitat destruction, genetic studies, exchange programs and repopulation activities. All these are in a bid to protect the graceful beast and ensure that it does not disappear from the face of the earth, like some other animals like the mammoth and the dodo.
