Can't I Fix My Credit Myself?
Yes, you do not need to hire anyone. However it may be in your interest to because it can be a difficult task. Some of the most common roadblocks are:
- I want to get started in fixing my credit history, who do I contact? - Is it legal? - What factors impact my credit score? - Where do I get copies of my reports?
Obviously there are many more roadblocks but lets examine the process of removing negative items in detail. First you need to identify an item that you feel is inaccurate. The Fair Credit Reporting Act a law passed by Congress says you can dispute any item on your report that you feel is inaccurate.
Let's say you have a collection on your report. You are going to have to write a letter to each bureau. In other words you will have to write three letters, one to Experian, one to Equifax, and one to TransUnion. In your letter you need to include the item in dispute, the reason for the dispute, and any other related documentation.
Now the bureaus are required by that same law to investigate your disputed item. However it is not in the bureaus financial interests to do this. Why? Don't they want accurate credit files?
You would think, however because the bureaus don't make any money selling a credit report to consumers they could care less as to the accuracy of your file. Instead the bureaus earn their money by selling this information about you to businesses and lenders.
Thus, when a bureau must take the time to investigate a dispute they are spending money that would otherwise be profits. Credit reporting is a big business; between the three major bureaus they earn billions of dollars a year! Don't think for a second this is government profit, in no way shape or form are the bureaus affiliated with the government.
In fact quite the contrary, the Federal government has fined the bureaus time and time again for not complying with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The bureaus have created vast and elaborate techniques at avoiding investigating items.
With a professional service you will have someone that is familiar with these techniques and with the power to intervene legally if need be. They are also experts in federal consumer laws and can use debt validation, court intervention, and goodwill intervention.
With such an important and influential number as your FICO score why leave it up to amateurs. If you are not a mechanic would you try to install a new motor in your car? Then why on earth would you consider fixing this number without professional help?
These three digits determine if you rent or own your home. The toys you have to purchase, disposal income, the kind of car you drive, where you kids are going to school and the list goes on and on. Regardless of what route you choose take action and stop living with the high cost of a low score.
