The life and times of Lake Wakatipu is both scientific and legendary. Scientifically it is believed that the lake was created by the movement of a massive glacier at some stage in the last ice age about 15,000 years ago. But according to local Maori legends it was the giant named Matau that caused the massive carve in the mountain which resulted in the lake. It is believed that the giant was scorched to death whilst he was asleep after abducting the daughter of the Maori Chief. The burning giant, apparently, has caused a massive crater on the ground and the ice and snow of the nearby mountain to melt to create the water and the lake. The actual shape of the lake resembles the posture of a giant curled up in sleep.

The other interesting fact associated with the Lake Wakatipu is the rise and fall of its water level. The five inch fluctuation every five minutes is believed to be caused by the Giants heart, which obviously still lives on in Queenstowns culture. Scientists of course offer a different explanation to this mysterious occurrence by claiming the rise and the fall of the water level is due to the atmospheric pressure which continuously fluctuates.

Visitors to the Lake can explore the Hidden Island. Supposed to be located close to the town located just below the Cecil Peak, this island is hard to spot, but if you do manage a glimpse you would know what the heart of the Giant Matau looks like.
