His next destination in life was a law school

, though he dropped out soon. He began to live a life of a hippie, traveled a lot and also experimented with drugs. After his return to Brazil, he became a songwriter. The government decided his songs were subversive, and at the age of 27 he was arrested. His first book, Hell Archives was published at the age of 35 in 1982. The Pilgrimage, his widely acclaimed book, was based on 500 mile walk that he undertook at the age of 40. This book was published in 1986, and it was this event that made him decide to take up the career of a writer full time.
