The increase production of stomach acid is another heartburn and stress related consequence. When people are stressed they produce more stomach acid. This is because of a hormone called cortisol which is manufactured in the adrenal gland. Too much stomach acid is one of the main causes of acid reflux and consequent heartburn.
It is necessary to find ways to relieve the stress in our lives if we want to reduce the chances of having bout with heartburn. There are several things that can be done to help fight stress. One thing that can be done are some light exercises. They will not only help with blood circulation but with the digesting of food also If you want to do more intensive exercises, it's best to wait several hours after eating because doing right after may contribute to a heartburn attack.
Chewing gum is another simple remedy. Moving food through the digestive system as well as stimulating the production of saliva which helps against heartburn are just two things chewing gum can do.
Another simple remedy that helps both stress and heartburn is to eat smaller meals more often and avoid over-eating. Eating small quantities of protein and carbohydrates have been known to help against stress as they do with heartburn. Smoking, drinking alcohol, or even drinking coffee is the worse thing you can do with regard to heartburn and stress.
The thing about heartburn and stress which is interesting is that they feed on each other, On the one hand you might start stressing because you feel you heartburn coming on and on the other your heartburn will make you more stressed out. Fortunately, they can both be treated by having healthier life habits: more exercise, smaller meals, no alcohol, no smoking. Getting control over your stress isn't easy, but by doing so you stand a chance of eliminating your heartburn as well and isn't that what it's all about.
