Molds grow and reproduce by utilising a suitable food source; this can be any organic material. As such leaves, wood, paper and even dirt qualify as a suitable food for mold. Mold effectively eats whatever it settles on and therefore over time destroys it. Mold will continue to reproduce while there is food available and therefore if you spot mold in a damp corner of a room or cupboard you will gradually see the thickness of the mold increase. Mold appears in a variety of colors, but is more often associated with discoloration, gray, brown and black colors.

The problem for humans who have mold in their homes is that mold releases millions of microscopic spores into the air. They float about and get ingested into people's lungs and can cause very severe respiratory conditions.

If you find you have an area of mold in your home it is essential you get the problem rectified professionally as soon as possible. As mentioned, mold will destroy anything it settles on and this can include carpets, clothes, shoes, furniture and in extreme cases, can actually make the structure of your home unsafe.

The problem is, you can't always see mold, but you should look out for tell-tale signs like unusual growth on carpets, soft furnishes, corners of walls and so on. Another sign is the distinct earthy or musty smell.
