The Lion King Tickets - Celebrating Many Milestones

Share: Though it has been over a decade since the Disney animated feature The Lion King
was brought to the Broadway stage, the musical is still breaking records. The performance set a new record this past Thanksgiving holiday weekend, when Broadway's Minskoff Theater announced the total gross of $1,692, 957 during their eighth week of performances that ran Nov. 23-29, 2009. The previous Minskoff record was held during the last run with lions, when it grossed $1,691,705 in December 2007. Celebrating twelve years on Broadway this month, the show also celebrated 5,000 performances at the Minskoff Theater. The show remains the longest-running musical in Broadway history and the first American performance to see 50 million attendees, reports Broadway World. The show opened for previews Oct. 13, 2007 at the New Amsterdam Theater and officially a month later. The show moved to its current home, the Minskoff Theater, on June 13, 2006.
In yet another milestone, The Lion King's performances range far and wide, helping the show to celebrate its 10th anniversary in London. The show celebrated in style at the Lyceum Theater in October when cast members and the creative team came out in celebration of a decade at West End. The performance in London alone has seen eight million spectators with nearly 4,200 performances.
"It's profoundly gratifying to see that British audiences continue to embrace The Lion King in such an extraordinary way," said Thomas Schumacher, producer and President of Disney Theatrical Productions. "I am tremendously proud of our entire creative team as well as our cast and crew in the West End who bring Julie Taymor's glorious production to life each and every time the curtain rises." The London performance has helped to garner more than $200 million toward The Lion King's overall gross, helping to make it one of the most successful Broadway shows around.

Share: Apart from its standing locations in New York and national tour, the show has seen international audiences with performances in London, Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and Las Vegas, with a new production set to begin September 2010 in Singapore. The newest production will mark a first for Disney Theatrical Productions as The Lion King's already large-standing repertoire, which includes translated performances in five languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French and Dutch).
"We're gigantically proud to bring The Lion King to the audiences of Singapore," Schumacher said in a press release. "When we decided to bring The Lion King to Singapore we knew that this was the right show at the right venue at the right time." Though the official casting and production terms have yet to be announced, it is likely that Singapore's performances will be just as grand and see just as much attention as other international musicals.
The Lion King has won over 30 awards, including Best Musical at both the 1998 Tony Awards and New York Drama Critics Awards. The show's recorded album picked up a 1999 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, as well as a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.
