The stage adaptation of the Lion King by Julie Taymor won six Tony Awards in 1998, including the one for Best Musical, and has been featured on stages around the world. It is currently playing at the San Diego Civic Theatre in downtown San Diego and will run through November 8.

The Lion King musical debuted in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre and was a huge success even before it premiered on Broadway, which happened at the New Amsterdam Theater in 1997.
