The Lions of Africa

These lions are mainly found in sub Saharan Africa, east and South Africa. Most of them are social cats and live in groups of up to fifteen lions. There are some loners especially the males who sometimes find themselves without a group to live with. The lions of Africa normally hunt from dusk until the early hours of the morning. When the sun is hot, there activity is limited. They normally lie down under shades of shrubs and groom each other, lick and touch each other affectionately. Lions normally spend about two hours walking, one hour eating and about twenty hours lazing about.

Lions of Africa are predators. They mostly love preying big animals such as wildebeests, giraffes, zebras and buffaloes. The females in a group are the ones that do all the hunting. Once they make a kill, they invite the rest of the group to enjoy the meal. The male lions' work is to protect the group from intruders. These normally are other males that might want to take over the pride. Male lions are territorial and they mark off their territory by urine, roaring and fighting off the intruders.

The organizational behavior of lions can either be social organization or nomads. Social organization is made up of about fifteen lionesses, their cubs and up to three males living together in a pride. Nomads usually are lions who move about either in pairs or singularly. They are not associated with any group. Nomads mostly are males that have been chased away from a resident group they were associated with.
