The Little Things That Make Homes Safer For Occupants

When deciding on the home security system for your home

, think from a burglars perspective. If you can get in without the keys and without disturbing the inmates, then the burglar can as well and much easily. Most burglaries happen because home owners make it easy for burglars. They will leave spare keys under doormats, under garden pots or plain simple leave the door unbolted. Thieves know what home owners having been doing for ages. Most burglars dont even care to break doors or windows, thanks to home owners generosity and lethargy.

Electronic and mechanical help home security systems, but common sense helps do a better job. The two most important things that burglars consider as ideal situation for breaking in are:

c.Homes with unprotected windows, and

d.Homes that they can enter without making a noise.

Take off these two ideal situations and you will have protected your home for most part. There are some things that you can do to make your home safer. Follow them.

a.If you are moving into a new home, the first thing you need to do is replace every lock in the house, especially the ones that lead out. Remember that you will never know who else have the key with them and use that to gain entry.

b.The front door is not the only point of entry that burglars use to gain entry. In fact that is the last place they will try to force open. At least a third of all forced entry is made through windows on the first floor, and it is not uncommon to break the glass. So use a laminated glass, a heavy one at that, so breaking is difficult to accomplish.

c.Laminated glass alone is not enough deterrence; you will need to secure it with a lock. If you can place the lock in such a position as to make it visible from the outside all that good because breaking locks and noise are two things that burglars hate most.

d.Fixing grilles to windows, especially on the first floor of the house is important. Grilles are difficult to break especially if made of wrought iron. The advantages of grilles are numerous, they are practically impossible to break without making noise and inviting attention from outside the house.

e.Fix mortise locks to the front doors, and let the doors be not less than 2 inches thick; the ideal size for doors. Fix the locks in such a way that the screws are not visible from outside. Having more than one lock definitely helps. A lock at the top half of the door and one at the bottom half.

f.Have a door viewer on the front door. It will help you identify the person calling you before you open the door. Hardcore burglars can push in and gain entry. It is not uncommon for these types of burglars to rob at gun point. Most often burglars of these types look out for real valuables, like jewelry and cash. They are potential killers who stop at nothing remember.

g.If you house has two entry points with one in the back and if you have to answer someone in the front ensure that the door in the back is locked. Thieves come in pairs and sometimes more. It is common for thieves to distract you at one point while another one sneaks in at the rear. It is therefore advisable you keep all doors locked at all times, even when you occupy.

h.Leave at least a couple of lights on at night, preferably a low energy one. Avoid shrubs and other places that can help burglars take shelter before they commit the act. If you plan staying away from home for a long time, ask someone to take care of your home or arrange security guards for those times.
