The Long-term Cure To Loneliness
Curing loneliness can be a struggle for those who feel stuck in a negative cycle of thought and action
. A mind filled with negative thoughts and emotions regarding one's situation can de-motivate us to take part in the world, leading us to withdrawal further and exacerbating the problem.
First and foremost, loneliness coping is about mindset and intention. To get over the feeling, one must adopt a positive mindset and must explicitly state the intention of getting through the bouts of feeling lonely. Only through this process can one truly release themselves from reoccurrence.
Remedies for Loneliness
Go online and there are number of websites devoted to activities that can help us get over feelings of loneliness. But these activities sometimes are only getting us through a rough time and not addressing the underlying issues. To be fully "cured" one must adjust their thinking and mental process. All the activity in the world will not help if the mind is stuck and unable to release emotions linked to loneliness. Here are some practical, thoughtful mental practices that can help with combatting loneliness for the long-term.
Mindful Thoughts
Having negative thoughts is typical for all humans. It is dwelling and not releasing these thoughts, however that can make one feel isolated and alone. So often we simply "allow" negative thoughts to keep running through our minds. Being thoughtful, meaning consciously recognizing when this is happening is important to restore one's outlook to a more positive plane. When one catches themself in constant negative thought it is important to redirect the flow. How does one do this? You need to be prepared with a few positive affirmations to use. Here are some simple common affirmations to call upon:
Loneliness is like snow that melts in the sun.
I am grateful for the good things I have.
With God I am never alone.
I am my own best friend.
I am going to make this day a great one.
Research indicates that "happy thoughts" and positive affirmations can stop feelings of loneliness and ultimate lead to a happier life.
Prayer and Meditation
Like affirmations and positive thinking, prayer and meditation helps us to focus and ultimately control the mind. Sitting in silence and letting go of stress and negative energy has a benefit to both physical and mental health. Getting in touch with one's higher power and meditating on one's relationship to all things in the universe provides a means to center us and provide perspective. Loneliness is ultimately about disconnectedness, and prayer and meditation are the means to connect on spiritual level.
Being mindful, using affirmations and tapping into our relationship with others at the spiritual level through prayer and meditation will ultimately lead to a positive mindset. With the turnaround of our mental state, one will also find that the motivation to participate in physical activities is greater. You won't have to drag yourself out of that chair or out of the house.
This is ultimately the long-term "cure" for loneliness: a positive and reaffirming mental state partnered with physical activity that reduces stress and leads to a more healthful and fulfilling life.
