The Magic of Pearls in Oysters
Pearls in oysters are rare. Most mollusks do not have usable pearls inside of them, in fact, it is not normal for a mollusk to make a pearl. If it happened all the time, pearls would be commonplace and lose much of their value.
A mollusk makes a pearl in response to a stimulus - as part of its defense against an intrusion. With this knowledge one can begin to understand and appreciate the value of pearls.
The magic of pearls in oyster have long been known through out ancient times. The healing qualities of pearls are still known today. Many products on the market today have some form of the pearl in its ingredients. Even the oyster shells have medicinal qualities good for bone and cartilage remedies. Other than medicinal attributes are the simple facts of the increased beauty of the wearer and the since of well being that is obvious when worn.
Everyone wants to look and feel good, it is natural to want these things, so the magic of the pearl gives one a feeling of elevation and elation. According to historians, humans collected pearls because they believed that the gems provided the wearer with mythical powers: health, eternal youth, vitality and bliss. Many middle eastern countries -- some of the world greatest admirers of pearls -- thought pearls were drops of moister from the heavenly worlds. Some even thought that pearls were the tears of gods. They believed that, on warm summer days, mollusks would float to the surface of the sea, open up to absorb the sunlight, and catch the holy teardrops. The warm rays of light and salty tears would combine to grow a beautiful pearl when the oyster descended to the ocean floor.
With modern knowledge, people now know that pearls do not actually fall from the sky, but even with today's knowledge of how pearls are formed, still there is a mystique that surrounds these gems.
